A letter from Dr. Biddulph to the children of UCPS.
Following our immersive and interesting STEM week, year 5 wrote a recount about everything they did during the week in English.
Our grammar focus was cohesive devices, to help the paragraphs connect to each other. The term ‘cohesive devices’ refers to the conjunctions, conjunctions (also known as connectives) and pronouns used to link the parts of a piece of writing. Using the same verb tense throughout a text also offers cohesion.
This piece of writing shows how cohesive devices can be used:
The time conjunctions (in red: first, then, later, after, finally) are used to show that this is a process that has several steps and an end goal. These words are also adverbs, because they tell us when something is done.
Pronouns (in blue: these to refer to the organs and it to refer to the body) are used to show that the writer is referring back to a person or object already named.
Conjunctions (in green: and, so, because) are used within sentences to link ideas within a sentence.
Our handwriting focus this week was practising sloped writing: parallel downstrokes: bb. Our spelling words were cobblestone, quibble, flabbergasted, snobbery, stubborn, wobble.
In maths, we began looking at fractions, specifically:
- Sequencing fractions (counting on in that fraction value, e.g. one half, one, one and one half, two, two and a half…)
- Ordering fractions(with the same denominator) from smallest to largest and vice versa
- Equivalent fractions
- Fractions between 0 and 1 (placing them on a number line)
A numerator is the top number, it says how many parts there are.
A denominator is the bottom number, itsays how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
