This year has flown by, can you believe we’re in the last half term of year 5 already? It’s a Wonder… which is also our focus text in year 5 this half term!
The story, by R.J. Palacio, focuses on the ups and downs of a child called August who has a facial deformity. We chose this text as our Project (formerly Topic) for this half term is ‘Aesthetics’ and exploring what beauty really means.
The children began their journey with this book by exploring the themes running through the story, which so far we’ve established include:
- Courage
- Fitting in
- Inclusion
- Judgement
- Kindness
We recapped area and perimeter in maths this week. Here are our activity sheets:
Sum2 Week 1 Area & Perimeter Sheets
This is our plan for maths this half term:
Week 1 Area & Perimeter
Week 2 Long Multiplication
Week 3 Time
Week 4 Negative numbers
Week 5 Statistics (recording data, spotting patterns, analyzing results, averages etc.)
Week 6 Statistics (recording data, spotting patterns, analyzing results, averages etc.)
Week 7 TBC nearer the time
As always, we will adapt if we feel the needs of the children are different following a unit of work.
Science looks at the human body this half term, namely the circulatory system. This week we investigated blood and the cells it’s made up of (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets & plasma) along with the veins, arteries and capillaries of the circulatory system. We even tried our hand at painting blood vessels, inspired by close up photos taken through microscopic lenses!
Next week we will look more at the role of the heart in the human body.
