It has been a fantastic start to the year over the past week and a half. Children have come back to school showing the golden agreements and are ready to learn. Year 5 teachers, Mrs Acar, Ms Gammage and Mrs Beattie, have been setting expectation and routines for Olympus, Fuji and Sagarmatha.
We have also launched our history led project, which is about the Anglo-Saxons. We started by exploring some Anglo-Saxon artefacts and how they might tell us about life during this period.
In English and Guided Reading, we have been delving into some Norse mythology and understanding the features and literary skills used to write them. Children have enjoyed inventing and describing their own Norse heroes. We have also been studying the text Beowulf in Guided Reading, which has taught us about the fjords of Scandinavia and is rich in descriptive vocabulary.
In Maths, we have been learning about place value in numbers to 1,000,000. Children can find the number of zeroes confusing, so they have learnt to use the commas to separate ones from thousands. The sheets can be downloaded here for extra practice: maths Place Value
We had a lovely time in Art with Mrs Smith this week creating some art inspired by nature on the theme of gratitude. The children have made some truly beautiful pieces!
If you missed the Welcome to Year 5 presentation this week given by Mr Drane, you can find the slides to download here: Welcome to Year 5
Walking home
Children in Year 5 can walk home alone if parental consent has been given on parent mail. If you wish your child only to walk home on specific days, please notify your class teacher in writing each time you wish them to walk home. We understand that this can feel tedious, but safeguarding is our first priority and we value your support with this.
Next week
In English we will continue with Norse myths, designing and describing villains and planning our own myths.
In Maths, we will be continuing with place value as well as rounding and ordering numbers.
In STEM we are learning about materials and their properties, including separating mixtures using different techniques.
In History we will learn who the Anglo-Saxons were and why they came to Britain.
Homework expectations
Our school policy is that we do not set sheets of homework that are sent home every week. We do, however, ask that the following are completed:
Daily reading for pleasure (30 minutes)
Daily times table practice (10 minutes)
Personal research projects or writing for pleasure (optional).
We hope you have a super weekend,
The Year 5 team.
