This week, our Year 5 children have been busy and accomplished so much. It was lovely to see everyone in their favourite outfits on non-school uniform day—it brought so much colour and personality to our week!

English
The children have worked hard on their non-chronological reports about volcanoes. They planned and outlined their paragraphs, chose sub-headings, and learned how to use relative clauses. By the end of the week, they began drafting their paragraphs with impressive attention to detail. Next week, we’ll finish our reports and begin exploring parts of the film The Impossible (based on the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami). Using this as inspiration, we’ll work on writing a newspaper article about the event.

Note: We will only show selected clips from the film to highlight the natural disaster, avoiding any mature themes. If you have questions about this, feel free to contact us.

Maths
This week, we revised how to divide and multiply by 10, 100, and 1,000, focusing on reasoning and problem-solving. The children have shown great progress! Next week, we’ll begin our work on fractions, covering unit fractions, whole fractions, and equivalent fractions. To download this week’s sheets for extra practice, click here: Au2 week4 sheets

STEM
In STEM, we’ve been discussing the Industrial Revolution and its impact on energy use. We also talked about how small changes in our daily habits can make a big difference to the environment. Next week, we’ll explore how much energy everyday appliances use, making this topic even more practical and relevant for the children.

RSE

We have just begun our PSHCE learning about relationships and sex education. In this unit, children will learn about the changes to both male and female bodies during puberty, how to stay clean and look after their bodies and ways to manage feelings and emotions. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to the class teacher.

To support their learning, we encourage children to:

  • Read for 30 minutes each day. A First News reading comprehension can be downloaded here: L2-Look-Closer-908
  • Practise times tables for 10 minutes daily
  • Revise spellings from the Year 3-4 and Year 5-6 spelling lists
  • Spanish blog activities can be found here: Y5 WK4

Thank you for your continued support. We’re excited for another wonderful week of learning ahead!
