Despite the 4-day week, year 5 packed in lots of brilliant learning opportunities! Thank you to all parents who attended learning conversations and shared in our pride for the progress made by each student this year.
Maths
We worked on units of measurement this week, converting from units which begin with the prefixes kilo-, centi- and milli-. Year 5 worked hard to solve multi-step problems involving these concepts. Worksheets can be found here: lesson 1 sheets
English
We worked on the text from our stories this week, using various elements of figurative language to paint pictures in the minds of our readers. Next week, we will work on the actual pictures, letting our creativity flow onto the page and tell even more of our story through imagery.
STEM
Our Solar System topic continued as we explored historical versus current scientific understanding. We compared the outdated geocentric model with the modern heliocentric model, and learnt about how the influential scientists Copernicus and Galileo worked hard to disprove people’s incorrect beliefs.
Guided Reading
We continued Zoe’s story as she navigates her experiences with the Eels tribe, diving deeper into the themes and characters.
VE Day
On Thursday, we spent the day learning about the cultural and historical significance of Victory in Europe day to mark its 80th anniversary. Year 5 read and listened to recounts from the time, including letters from soldiers celebrating the end of the war, and stories of evacuated children, and were even able to create their own written responses inspired by this. Later in the day, we attempted some codebreaking with Morse code, and created poppies in our school colours. The most memorable moment was gathering in the inner circle to listen to some beautiful poetry readings performed by year 6, followed by a 2 minute silence and a whole-school rendition of Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again.
Forest School
Fantastic forest school experiences continued with some very elegant leafy crowns, alongside exciting exploration and den-building.

Looking Ahead: Next Week
We’ll be heading to forest school again next week. Please ensure your child comes with long sleeves, trousers, and appropriate footwear, as this is required to meet safety and risk assessment guidelines.
Alongside year 6 SATs week, Year 5 will be sitting their summer assessments next week. We are sure the children will all do fantastically as long as they keep up their positive and resilient attitudes.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
