There has been an industrious feel to Year 5 this week, with children typing up their scary stories using Microsoft Word on laptops. We have been learning how to use some of the editing tools on Word, as well as formatting and basic functions. The children are very proud of their stories and we are looking forward to publishing them on the blog next week. Watch this space…!

Swimming lessons have also taken place this week in our very own pop-up pool. They have been learning and practising different strokes such as back stroke, breast stroke, butterfly and front crawl.

Maths has been challenging this week as we have moved on to 2 x 2 digit multiplication using both the grid (or area) method and the compact written method. The idea is that eventually children will be able to use the compact method as it is the most efficient, however we are happy for children to use either one that they are confident with. The sheets for this week can be downloaded here, and we recommend that you do have a look over some of these at home. Maths week 5 LESSON 2-3 SHEET

In our history lessons, we have been learning about the unique Mayan writing system. Children explored both the logograms and syllabograms and tried to write their names. It was tricky!

We had a fun time in STEM testing how much friction was produced on different ramp surfaces. In triads, the children had to plan their investigation, carry it out and collect results. At the end they needed to conclude what they had learnt from the enquiry. Some groups took the initiative to find averages in their results – they are starting to think more like scientists!

Next week

Swimming lessons for Year 5 will be on Monday 10th, Tuesday 11th and Thursday 13th February. The timetable can be found here: Swimming timetable FINAL  Please ensure children have swimming caps, towels and flip-flops or sliders to wear around the pool area.

Assessment week will be carried out next week. These are nothing to worry about but will inform our teaching in the next term.

There is no school on Friday 14th December. This is an INSET day. Term will reconvene on Monday 24th February.
