Our first full week back after half term has been jampacked with exciting events and fantastic learning. On Tuesday, Year 5 enjoyed a brilliant Sustainability Day in partnership with Cambridge Zero – as well as a delicious treat from Jack’s Gelato!
In English, we delved further into exploring Windrush, thinking about what living in Trinidad might have been like. Our learning was facilitated by reading Coming to England by Floella Benjamin and Diana Ewen! We thought about what we might pack if we were going on Windrush to travel to England – coats, dresses, photos, hair products: the list goes on! We even challenged ourselves to consider what else we might need to bring that isn’t a physical object: perhaps a positive mental attitude, and definitely some courage!
You can watch a CBBC show about Floella Benjamin’s story, adapted from the book, here!
In Maths, we explored geometry further, focusing on how to classify different quadrilaterals and what makes a polygon regular or irregular. You can find this week’s worksheets here!
In Guided Reading, we dove deeper into Princess Sophia’s story, learning about how she lost her mother and brother and beginning to figure out why she felt a little bit lost! This week’s chapters can be found here!
You can download and pre-read next week’s chapters here!
In PRE, we consider sharing on a deeper level, and thought about whether the strongest people always get what they want and whether they should? There were some really rich discussions in all three classes about what strength is, and what this means for our life experiences.
In STEM, we explored fermentation and conducted a controlled investigation into the conditions required for fermentation to take place.
In Spelling, we learned about the ‘cious’ phoneme. Our words were:
delicious, nutritious, infectious, ambitious, cautious, conscious, vicious, precious, fictitious
Next week:
Please remember our school policy to safeguard children in hot weather. This includes:
- children to wear a sun hat during playtime outside.
- sun cream applied before school
- a small bottle of sun cream brought to school in bag
- children to bring a full bottle of water to school and fill it up during the day
Have a lovely weekend,
Year 5 team!
