This week, Year 5 have been completing their summer assessments in Reading, Arithmetic, Reasoning and Grammar and Punctuation. We have also been conducting a Science investigation and observing the children using their working scientifically skills. Year 5 have made us really proud by their empathy for the Year 6 children sitting their SATS; you could not hear a pin drop throughout the whole learning street. Thank you Year 5.
As well as completing our Maths assessments, we have had a couple of lessons on volume and capacity. These can be quite confusing concepts, especially when converting between millilitres and litres. How about doing some practical measuring activities at home which will help children to have more experience of these concepts? The sheets can be downloaded here for further practice: lesson 1 sheets Y5-Summer-Block-5-D2-Compare-volume-2020
In English, we have started to publish our journey picture books. We had an amazing presentation from author and illustrator Tonka Ouzounova. She gave the Year 5 pupils lots of ideas about how illustrations can work together with text to help tell the story.

Next week we will continue to publish our picture books. We are looking forward to sharing them with you on Family Friday.
In Science, we were investigating the rotation of the earth on its axis. To prove this, we measured our shadows every couple of hours throughout the day to see how they changed and moved. We noticed the shortening and lengthening of the shadows as the earth rotated, as in the video here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0119jxk

Next week
Next week is the last week of term. Children will need to bring their PE kits and forest school kits home during the break. Please note that we have had a lot of unnamed lost property in classes. Please ensure that this is claimed if you are missing things.
Family Friday will take place next Friday 23rd May from 2.30-3.15pm. We look forward to welcoming you to our classes again.
Have a lovely weekend.
The Year 5 Team.
