In Maths, we have been learning about polygons, including the difference between regular and irregular polygons. The children have also explored parallel and perpendicular lines, classified quadrilaterals and practised estimating the size of angles before measuring them accurately. You can find this week’s Maths sheets here: Maths sheets week 5L1 Challenge L2 Challenge GD L3 Challenge L4 Challenge Lesson 2 Game Guess my Quad
Next week, we will be calculating the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes and finding the area of compound shapes.
In English, Year 5 have been busy publishing their poems. We are creating a class anthology of poetry and the children have been putting a great deal of thought into the design and presentation of their pages. They have been incredibly creative and we are looking forward to sharing the finished anthology with other classes.
In STEM, the children have been learning about preventing and treating infections. They explored the role of the immune system, white blood cells and vaccinations, learning about the history of vaccines and how they work. We also discussed the importance of oral hygiene, the types of diseases poor dental hygiene can cause and how to keep our teeth healthy. To finish the lesson, we carried out an investigation by placing boiled eggs in water, fruit juice and cola. The children made predictions about what might happen to the eggs and will observe the changes each day next week, recording their findings on an observation sheet.
In PSHE, we explored how to recognise and report concerns or abuse. The children learned about different types of abuse, how to report concerns, and the importance of speaking to a trusted adult. They approached this sensitive topic with great maturity and respect, showing thoughtful contributions throughout the lesson.
A reminder that Family Friday will take place on Friday 10th July at 2:30pm. We look forward to welcoming you into the classroom.
Please send your child to school with a carrier bag at some point next week, as they will be bringing all of their books home on Friday.
Have a lovely weekend!
