It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back this week after the spring break. We have a very short term and a lot to accomplish! We started the week by launching our new class writing project; picture books about journeys. We have explored Floella Benjamin’s ‘Journey to England’ as well as the wider context of the Windrush generation. Using this as inspiration, we will launch into writing our own journey stories next week.
Linked to this project, we have taken the idea of the ‘grip’ suitcase and will be exploring how the contents of a suitcase can tell you a lot about a character. Children will create suitcases for a character in their journey story. For this, we need your help! Each child will need to bring in a shoebox by the end of next week, which will be transformed into a suitcase over the term. At the end of this term, we hope to put on an exhibition for parents to come and see.
In Maths, we have been learning about the properties of 3D shapes, and building them from nets. This was a lot of fun! The worksheets can be reviewed here: sheets for summer 1 week 1
We have also started a new Guided Reading book by Marcus Sedgewick called ‘Floodland’. It is set in a dystopian future on the Isle of Ely!
In Science, we will be starting a new unit on the Earth and Space. This will involve creating scale models of the solar system as well as investigating how we know about space, the Earth’s axis and the orbit of the moon. It is always a fascinating topic and we hope the children enjoy it.
Next week
We will be starting forest school next week. You should have received an email about forest school kit. It is really important that children have long sleeves, trousers and appropriate footwear to comply with the risk assessments. It may also start to get warm so please provide your child with a hat and sun cream. The classes will take place weekly as follows:
Olympus – Monday
Fuji – Tuesday
Sagarmatha – Thursday
Shoeboxes – please bring these in by the end of next week.
