It has been lovely to welcome the children back to another term, and to see them get so stuck into their learning.

In Maths, we have revised and extended our learning from the end of last term, and are making links between fractions and decimals. At the end of the week, we added an extra layer of complexity by discussing percentages, and how they equate to fractions and decimals. We will continue this learning next week, developing our confidence with using and manipulating percentages. You can find this week’s maths sheets here: Maths week 1 lesson 1,2 sheet Maths week 1 lesson 3 percentages worksheet

In English, we have started our new topic about memoirs. Children have explored many different examples of memoirs, and are beginning to pull out craft moves that they liked. These will feed into the lessons they are taught later in the topic. Next week, we will begin planning and drafting our ideas.

In Art, Year 5 began a study of a new artist, Albrecht Dürer, who was known for his intricately detailed illustrations and prints of animals. Children experimented with different line-based shading techniques such as cross-hatching and scribbling to illustrate their own animals. Next week, we will build onto this by discussing symbolic meanings of animals, and drawing hybrid creatures.

In Geography, we continued our learning about Hunstanton’s features leading up to the school trip later this term. We have explored the effects of sea level rise, coastal erosion and flooding on coastal towns, and began exploring ways to mitigate these issues. Children continued creating tourist leaflets detailing Hunstanton’s key features. Once we have finished our geography topic, our next focus will be on computing, in which children will be coding using MicroBits.

A reminder about the Hunstanton trip:

  • Tuesday 28th April will be year 5’s school trip to Hunstanton.
  • Departure time: 8am from school site. Please allow plenty of time to avoid lateness.
  • Clothing: uniform as usual, but with sturdy shoes suitable for walking and wet weather.

Finally, on Thursday, all classes had a PE session learning the basics of Ultimate Frisbee to prepare for the UCPS games tournament at the end of term. Well done to everyone for getting stuck in and trying their best in the windy conditions!

A reminder about PE kits:

  • Many children did not have their kits to change into this week. Please support us by ensuring children have their PE kits in school
  • Children must have a plain white t-shirt, plain blue/navy shorts or trousers, and suitable trainers for PE outdoors.
  • Wednesday and Thursday are PE days for year 5 this term.

Have a nice weekend,

Year 5 Team
