This week, Year 5 continued their Science unit on materials and changes. We learnt that rust is formed during a chemical reaction called oxidation.  We set up our own investigation to find out whether an iron nail would rust in:

  • lemon juice
  • oil
  • water

There may be other questions you have about oxidation, or you may want to try a similar experiment at home to test a different variable. ou could change:

  • the type of metal
  • location
  • temperature
  • length of time

We would be very interested to see your home learning on this!

In Writing, we finished our writing showcase on Beowulf’s monologue. We will continue the story next week using drama into writing. Children will be learning how to describe a character and setting and how to write tense, exciting action paragraphs.

In Maths, we have been applying our mental strategies for addition and subtraction to money problems. We have encouraged the children to use a strategy called ‘adjustment’. Instead of adding £1.99, they add £2.00, and then subtract 1p. This is a much more efficient method and should save you lots of time when you are buying your groceries! If you would like to continue to work on this at home, the sheets for this week can be found here:

Practice with negative numbers: https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/450/ITP-Number-Line

We have noticed that there are some gaps in Year 3 and 4 spelling words and high frequency words. Please use these resources to practice spelling contractions and homophones at home:

Next week:

Swimming on Tuesday

If your child has pieced ears, they must be removed or covered with tape. Failing to do so will result in your child missing the lesson as this is part of Parkside’s risk assessment.

PE on Wednesday

Please make sure you have the correct kit in school – trainers and warmer clothes may be needed as we move into the colder seasons.

Home Learning

This week there is no additional home learning. We just ask that, as usual, children support their own learning and:

  • Read for 30 minutes each day
  • Practise times tables for 10 minutes each day – you may wish to use TT rockstars or topmarks ‘hit the button’
  • Practise and revise contractions and homophones using the sheets provided.
  • Choose one of these comprehensions to complete: L1-Four-Stories-848
