I think you’ll agree that the start of the week, hoy hace mal tiempo – este muy frio! But it has warmed up. Hopefully, we will get a week of sunshine soon as spring begins to unfold. This term, we have been learning the Spanish vocabulary for different types of weather, as well as how to talk about it. There is a fun crossword to do if you would like to practice some more at home. Que Tiempo Hace Crossword With Wordbank

In STEM this week we continued our unit on forces with an investigation using levers. We found out that the heavier the load, the closer you need to put the fulcrum to the load, in order to lift it.

We also found out that there are different types of levers. Can you spot some in your home?

Levers

We had an incredible experience on Monday, when renowned poet, Michael Rosen, came to do a poetry workshop for KS2. As well as performing some favourite poems, he collaborated with the children to create a poem about refugees. He is currently working on a project for Holocaust Memorial Day. Even the staff were starstruck! It was amazing to see a favourite poet at work.

Our Maths lessons this week have been spent revising our learning so far and completing the Year 5 assessment in arithmetic and reasoning. We have also begun our next topic of fractions. This week we learnt how to find fractions equivalent to unit fractions. The sheets can be found here to have another go:

Our History lesson also had a Maths element to it, as we learnt about the Maya number system. This was a lot of fun and quite challenging too. The Maya number system was one of the first to use the concept of zero and as a result they could write very large numbers. You can find out more about the Maya base-2o system here: https://www.mayaarchaeologist.co.uk/school-resources/maya-world/mayamaths/

Next week:

We have an online seminar with Dr Diane on Monday where you can ask her some questions about the Maya or what it is like to be an archaeologist. Have a think about what you might ask her.

PE lessons are on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure you have trainers for both of these lessons. Failure to bring in the correct kit will result in a restart and a letter home.

We hope you have a happy, healthy and restful weekend.

The Year 5 team.
