This week you will be studying the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, using the lessons from BBC Teach.
Monday 8th June 2020
Activity: Match the character names to their illustrations on this activity sheet, then arrange the characters into pairs or groups according to their different relationships. Consider:
- Which characters live at court / which characters live in the town / the wood?
- Who is in love with who?
- Who wants Lysander and Hermia to be together?
- Who wants Demetrius and Hermia to be together?
Challenge: Describe the activity and excitement in Athens preceding Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding.
Tuesday 9th June 2020
The mechanicals are six characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream who perform the play-within-a-play ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’. They are a group of amateur and incompetent actors from around Athens, hoping for success by having their play chosen among several acts as the courtly entertainment for the royal wedding party of Theseus and Hippolyta.
Activity: Which role in the ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’ play is assigned to which character from A Midsummer Night’s Dream? Make a note in your home-school learning book.
Challenge: Use the activity sheet to describe the characters, e.g. loud and confident for Bottom or fearful and shy for Snug.
Wednesday 10th June 2020
Activity: Draw a two-column table in your home-learning book and label one side ‘Titania’ and the other ‘Oberon’. Watch the video again and make notes each time one of the characters makes a point in their argument. When you’ve finished, decide if one of them has a more powerful argument or whether it is balanced. Explain your decision underneath the table.
Challenge: In Act 2, Scene 1, lines 81-117 Titania gives a speech to Oberon about the environmental effects of their argument. Read the argument and either rewrite it in modern-day English or summarise what Titania is saying in your own words.
Titania’s speech to Oberon (Act 2, Scene 1)
Thursday 11th June 2020
Activity: Create your own magic flower. Draw a picture of it and describing its properties.
Challenge: Write a spell to be spoken when administering your magic flower. If you want to take this further, perform your magic spell to a member of your household.
Friday 12th June 2020
Activity: In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, there is a famous speech in Act 1, Scene 1, lines 236-262. This is by Helena and is called “How happy some o’er other some can be!”. Spot the rhymes in the speech and identify the meanings of metaphors, like “love looks not with the eyes but with the mind”.
How happy some o’er other some can be! by Helena (The Tempest, Act 1, Scene 1)
Challenge: Have a go at writing this speech out in modern-day English. This is helpful to really understanding what is being said.

Sustrans Outside In
Walking, cycling and scooting are great ways to contribute to keeping us active and healthy in body and mind. During this time where we are mostly required to stay at home, these activities become harder to do so. Sustrans Outside In therefore aims to provide ideas and inspiration to bring health and wellbeing activities into the home.
