It feels like the weather has truly turned this week and we are now definitively in autumn. Year 5 had a fantastic time at Forest School this week. The children enjoyed hunting for different tree leaves, using a list and pictures on their clipboards to help them identify and check off each one. They also had lots of fun building dens with sticks and branches.

In English, the children began describing the villains for their myths, exploring similes and finishing their plans ready to draft next week.

In Maths, we continued learning about place value, including ordering and rounding numbers within 1,000,000. This is a particularly tricky concept as it requires strong prior knowledge of the next and previous multiples of 10, 100, 1,000 and beyond. In STEM, we explored irreversible changes. For example, can you get the same egg back once it has been cracked and mixed into brownie ingredients? We also discussed which types of changes are reversible or irreversible. In particular, we looked closely at what happens when bread is toasted. The children took notes on their observation sheets, comparing the appearance, taste and texture of bread and toast.

In History, we learned about Anglo-Saxon society and how it was structured. The children enjoyed exploring this topic further through videos such as this one from BBC Bitesize: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zxsbcdm/articles/zqrc9j6#z82yvwx

To finish the week, Year 5 enjoyed a lively hockey session in the arena on Friday.

A reminder: children need to bring suitable clothing and a pair of shoes or wellies for Forest School.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
