It’s been a quiet week in Quad 1, with year 6 off in Snowdonia, but year 5 have packed in lots of fun learning!

We have focused on area and perimeter in maths, particularly focusing on rectilinear/compound shapes, as well as regular and irregular polygons. The sheets can be downloaded here for further practice: lesson 1 lesson 2 lesson 3 lesson 4

In English, we have started writing our memoirs. From meeting a friend for the first time, to amazing holiday experiences, to poignant personal moments, year 5 are enjoying exploring their favourite memories and conveying the emotions that they felt at the time. We will start editing next week, and can’t wait to share out wonderful collection of memories.

In guided reading, we continued to explore the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by Cameron and his family in Pig Heart Boy as they decide whether or not to volunteer for a life-changing trans-species heart transplant. It has raised some fascinating discussion points across the three classes!

We also started our Design and Technology unit this week by exploring the wonderful world of cam mechanisms. Children learnt about what they are, how they work, and where they might be found in the real world. They also got to make an example of a cam mechanism themselves! The children are looking forward to designing their own cam toys throughout the term.

In science, we continued our learning about microbes by exploring fermentation. We learnt that bacteria and yeast are sometimes used in food production, so they are not always harmful! Foods like bread, wine, yoghurt and soy sauce are all produced through fermentation using microbes. We watched this process in our lesson using yeast and flour, comparing the fermentation reaction with and without sugar added. The children enjoyed watching the bubbles slowly form as the chemical reaction released gases!

Next week

Please continue to ensure that children are coming to school with suncream, water bottles and sun hats as the weather continues to stay warm. Children without hats will be asked to stay out of the sun next week, and may not be able to participate fully in PE or other outdoor activities.

Have a lovely weekend.

The Year 5 Team.
