What a busy week! Here is a slightly belated summary of Spring 1 Week 3 (week beginning 13.1.25).

On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have a visit from the wonderful author Matt Goodfellow who spoke to the children in an assembly and even signed some books! We hope the children enjoyed this opportunity, as we have many budding poets across year 5.

We launched our project about the Maya this week, discussing where and when the civilization existed. This allowed us to compare our new historical period to other civilizations we have learnt about, such as the ancient Greeks and Romans.

We have continued to work on fractions in Maths. This week we have focused on comparing and ordering fractions, which can get particularly tricky when they have different numerators and denominators. For extra practice, find the worksheets here: maths Spring 1 – Week 2

Our scary short stories are shaping up to be positively petrifying in English. We have explored characters, our diamond moment (the best bit), plots and endings. Be prepared for a fright!

In STEM, we are continuing our learning about forces, particularly focusing on air resistance with a lesson about parachutes. We compared how effective different materials were as parachutes by measuring the speed at which our ‘parachutist’ fell!

Please continue to ensure that you have a full PE kit into school (appropriate for both indoor and outdoor lessons) in order to participate in lessons.

If you haven’t already, please respond to the letter sent home about swimming lessons to ensure your child is grouped appropriately based on their swimming ability. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher for support.

Swimming lessons will be happening from the 31st January-7th February and the following week of the 10th to the 13th February. Year 5 will be having 3 half-hour lessons each week.
