Welcome back to school and a very happy new year to you all. Year 5 teachers are all feeling very positive and excited about the term to come and are sure that Year 5s are in for a super term. This is often the term where lots of progress is made – so do work hard!

We have begun our term with the launch of our new history project – The Maya. We will be exploring this incredible civilisation using the enquiry question “What was unique about the Maya?”. A super introduction to the period can be found on the bbc website, along with some more information about them. Check out the websites below if you have the chance:

As part of our launch, children were using history and geography skills to locate the time and place of the Maya civilisation. We enjoyed getting the atlases out and learning about the topography of central America.

We have also revised the spellings that were taught last term and children have completed a spelling assessment. These will be sent home to you to go over the words that are not yet secure.

Finally, we have a Times Table Rockstar competition underway from Thursday 12th January. The children will be playing against other classes in Upper Key Stage 2 and will try to beat their opponents by getting the best score on TTRS. As a result, we will add 15 minutes practice to the home learning tasks for this term.

Next week:

PE for Year 5 will now take place on a Wednesday and a Thursday. Please ensure that you have the correct PE kit on both days. Incorrect kit will result in a restart being issued.

We are pleased to see many children reading for pleasure. Miss Lownsbrough has created a list of Year 5 fiction reading books that you may wish to peruse if you are stuck with what to read next:
