It has been a pleasure to welcome children back to school this week and settle back in to the term. Spring term always tends to fly by, so we want to make the most of every day!

This term, our project is the Maya. This is a fascinating period of history, located in Central America. There is a lot on BBC bitesize if you want to do some of your own research before we launch our project next week. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zq6svcw

We have continued to work on fractions in Maths. This week we have been converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers. The sheets and extra practice can be found here: Improper fractions and mixed numbers

In English, we have begun a new unit of work on scary short stories! We will eventually be publishing these on the blog so that children can download and read each other’s stories. Excellent for all the sleepovers. This week we have become familiar with the genre through reading lots of examples and noticing techniques used by the authors. Children are already trying many ideas out at home.

We have started a new Guided Reading book called ‘There’s a boy in the girls’ bathroom’ by Louis Sachar. It is a brilliant book that explores friendship, gender stereotypes and most importantly, self belief.

Please remember to bring full PE kit into school as PE lessons will resume next week.

You should be receiving some information about swimming lessons, which will be happening on the weeks of 31st January-7th February and the following week of the 10th to the 13th February. Year 5 will be having 3 half-hour lessons each week. Please ensure that you check the timetable and make sure your child has the correct kit on their swimming day.

Please return the letters you have received, indicating the swimming proficiency of your child. This will help us to group the children accurately.
