This week has flown by! The children have really enjoyed spending time outside, as most of them came prepared for the hot weather. Luckily, we have some shady areas in our playground where they were able to cool down. Thank you for encouraging your children to come to school with their water bottles, sun hats, and sun cream. Please continue to support them in coming to school prepared next week if the hot weather continues.
In English, the children have been busy revising and editing their memoirs. They practised ‘show, don’t tell’ techniques to bring their writing to life, used brackets to include extra information and learned how to ‘crack open’ overused words to find more precise alternatives. We also explored the importance of proofreading and discussed why real authors carefully check their work before publishing. Next week, we will publish our final memoirs and celebrate by sharing them with each other at our very own ‘Memoir Café’!
In Maths, the children have learned how to estimate area, compare volumes, and solve problems involving capacity. You can find links to the maths sheets here: Week 3 Maths sheets
In STEM, we investigated harmful microbes and discussed the importance of good hand hygiene. The children took part in a fun (and messy!) activity to show how germs spread: standing in a circle outside, they threw and caught a ball while one person had paint on their hands. By the end, it was clear just how far the ‘germs’ had travelled! The class also created posters for Key Stage 1 children to explain why washing your hands is important, including step-by-step instructions for washing effectively.

This week in D&T, the children investigated existing designers and manufacturers to gain inspiration for their own projects. They explored how different products are created and what makes a design successful. Using their research, they generated innovative ideas and began developing a simple design specification. The children also practised communicating their ideas clearly through discussions, labelled diagrams and drawings from different perspectives.
In PRE, we learned about the significance of the Vaisakhi Festival for Sikhs and explored why sharing is such an important value in the Sikh faith.
Sagarmatha Class Marble Jar Reward Day!
Sagarmatha Class has filled up their marble jar, well done, everyone! As a reward, we will be having an extended PE session filled with fun games, followed by a small picnic in the forest.
Some children have taken their PE kits home, so please ensure they bring them back to school. All children should wear their full PE kit for the entire day (white T-shirt and dark-coloured bottoms). Please note: this is not a non-school uniform day, children must wear their PE kits only.
Children are excited to bring in extra snacks such as sandwiches, crackers, or fruit for the picnic. However, they will still be having their usual school lunch at lunchtime. Please do not send any food containing nuts, or any chocolate, sweets, or fizzy drinks, as discussed with the children on Friday. They are also welcome to bring in small board or card games to enjoy with their friends. Although there was some excitement about water guns, these are not allowed in school, thank you for understanding. The children worked incredibly hard last term and have truly earned this fun reward day. We’re all looking forward to celebrating together! Apologies for any confusion, as this plan was finalised late on Friday afternoon.
Lastly, I’m looking forward to finally having our long-delayed learning conversations with Sagarmatha parents this week. Thank you for your continued support!
Wishing you a lovely weekend,
The Year 5 Team
