It has been another busy week in year five!

Firstly, a huge thank you to all the children for responding so flexibly, positively and maturely to the assessments that took place at the start of the week and then the unexpected school closure and return to remote learning on Thursday. It has been a pleasure to read and share your blitz poems and history research on our return to school today.

As we reach the conclusion of our class read, Letters from the Lighthouse, the children have been writing the endings to their own narrative pieces, inspired by the style of Emma Carroll. We can’t wait to read them.

In Maths, we have started looking at negative numbers and this will remain the focus next week. We continue to start our maths sessions with a series of questions designed to revise, apply and embed existing mathematical skills as well as consolidating times table knowledge.

Our topic has really captured the imagination of the year group. We have explored different aspects of the second world war, including the contribution made by women and the British Empire, across our curriculum in English, Guided Reading, History and through Playful Enquiry.

Our series of weekly TastEd sessions culminated in an extended lesson in which we prepared and enjoyed a delicious and nutritious Greek Salad. The children have really embraced these sensory culinary sessions and the two guiding principles: no one has to try; no one has to like it.

Looking ahead to next week:

English: Publishing our innovative stories based on Letters from the Lighthouse and completing a piece for our writing showcase.
Guided Reading: Our text for guided reading is Once by Morris Gleitzman.
Maths: Negative numbers
Topic:   World War 2
Science: Forces: friction
RE: Hinduism.
