It’s been a very different week without year 6, but certainly no less busy!
English
This week, children have dabbled with a variety of poetic devices. They explored a range of different skills, including alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, personification and pathetic fallacy. The children experimented with each technique to practice for their poems, and persevered with some very challenging techniques. For some, a sudden thunderstorm provided great inspiration for our onomatopoeia!
Maths
In Maths, we finished our measurement units with a lesson about estimating and measuring capacity. Then, we moved on to adding and subtracting decimals. Next week, we will continue this, particularly focusing on calculations with numbers that have a different quantity of decimal places.
Here are the worksheets from this week: Worksheets
Science
We dove into the world of microbes this week. We learnt that not all microbes are harmful, particularly focusing on the bacteria and fungi that help create the food we eat every day. We learnt that yeast is a type of fungus which helps bread rise by the process of fermentation. The byproduct of yeast’s fermentation, carbon dioxide, is what causes bread to rise. We conducted an experiment to explore this reaction further. Children worked in groups to select a variable to change, and measured the result. We learnt about how the water temperature, amount of yeast and amount of sugar influenced the fermentation reaction. Next week, we will analyse and write up our results.
Design and Technology
Children worked in groups this week to design their toys. We discussed the importance of designing for a target market with a specific audience and purpose, and we also considered the design specification which we will evaluate our designs against.
PSHE
In PSHE, we have moved on to the topic of safe and unsafe touch. This term, we will delve into concepts such as abuse and neglect, and how to communicate concerns to adults.
RE
In RE, we opened up our topic with a philosophical debate. Inspired by the story, ‘Stone Soup’, children developed enquiry questions, before voting on a favourite as a class and engaging in a child-led debate about the chosen topic. What fantastic oracy skills!
Have a lovely weekend.
Reminders: PE kits are needed on Thursdays this term.
