We have had another busy week in Year 5, where much of our learning on ‘Explosive Nature’ has come together. We have loved seeing the incredible posters that children have made and are still making. They have learnt so much and have been so imaginative in their publishing. We are excited to share them with you.
In Maths, we have begun some new learning on the topic of fractions. We started by thinking about unit fractions and understanding the whole. We have also begun to think about equivalent fractions and will continue with this next week. It is a topic that really requires a robust knowledge of times tables so do keep these facts fresh! You can download the worksheets here: Week 5 Maths – Fractions
We have also enjoyed trying some of the Decembar bar model problems set by White Rose. They are certainly worth a look and some are really tricky. The link is here: https://whiteroseeducation.com/resources/decembar
We are also getting to the climax of Malamander, our guided reading book. Many children couldn’t wait to finish and have read on to find out what happens, but we are getting a lot of rich discussion over characters and predictions.
In Geography, we have learnt about the epicentre of the Indian Ocean tsunami, 2004, which I am sure many parents will remember. We have considered the impact on human life as well as the physical causes of the tsunami. Children were brilliant at working out the epicentre from the clues they were presented with.
We have also started getting festive with our singing lessons. All of Year 5 really impressed us on Thursday with their beautiful voices and their professional focus.

Next week:
Please ensure your child has suitable PE kits for outdoor PE. You will be informed if your child does not have the correct kit in school.
We will continue to learn about fractions in Maths and will be continuing a new unit of English on first person narrative, inspired by ‘The Impossible’.
Family Friday is on Friday 13th December in the morning (8.30-9.15am)
The FOCUS Winter Fayre will also be happening on Friday 13th December after school finishes.
Have a wonderful weekend.
The Year 5 Team.
