This week, we immersed ourselves in the world of character! Our inspiration was the book Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers and we focused on one character from it, chosen by us as a class beforehand. We partnered up with Swifts class (year 2) for the week and, together, got to know our characters and their shared history. Swift’s character, the Jockey, was interesting to get to know and my, did she have a story to tell with our General!
We began the week by making our effigy of the General and explored elements of his character through art. Thank you for all that you brought in on Family Friday and the shared writing you did with your children.
After this, we met up with Swifts and together discussed what elements of our characters we would like to find out about. Then, we paired up and together discussed some potential stories that could be in the shared history of the Jockey and the General.
We took this further in a drama workshop with Mr Smith, and took it in turns to write to one another later on in the week; fine-tuning our stories.
Finally, we put pen to paper and wrote down the life story we had learned about our General as our Writing Showcase piece for the half-term.
In maths, we entered the field of division; beginning by revising the concept of what division is (the process of calculating the number of times one number is contained within another one) and moving on to a formal written method of calculating division by a 1-digit number (short division, otherwise known as bus stop method).

- Start by thinking about whether 7 will go into 3.
- It doesn’t, so think about whether 7 will go into 36. It goes 5 times to make 35. Put the 5 over the 6.
- There is a remainder of 1, so this 1 goes next to the 2 to make 12.
- 7 goes into 12 once and there is a remainder of 5, so write 1 over the 2 and put ‘R 5’ at the end. (‘R’ stands for ‘remainder’)

After half term, we will be learning how to divide with 2-digit numbers using long division (also known as “chunking”).
We will also be revisiting long multiplication and beginning to look at decimal numbers and fractions throughout the half term.
Our handwriting focus for the week was handwriting for different purposes: joining from p and b no ascender: bu, bi, pe, pu, pi, pr. Our spelling words were: buccaneer, ability, persuade, distribute, jubilant, persuasive, impulsive, inspiration, counterproductive.
