Year 5 have enjoyed a new year with a difference! This week we have been immersed in books and reading, with the story of ‘The Brave Tin Soldier’ by Hans Christian Anderson as our stimulus.

We begun the week with some active storytelling. The children explored through drama and movement the kinds of toys that might be found in a Victorian play room. They brought these toys to life with their incredible imaginations. As the week progressed, the children drafted their own stories, experimenting with developing character through flashbacks. They created a backstory to the Tin Soldier and wove it into the retelling using this technique.

We also explored the themes and stereotypes in the story. We thought about how stereotypes develop, how they can be limiting and lead to prejudice, and how we can avoid them.

We have also enjoyed getting to grips with our new times tables platform, times table rockstars. Competition is already fierce between children and classes. The website is an excellent way for children to learn rapid recall of their multiplication and division facts so do encourage your child to have a go at home.

This Term:

The overarching topic for Year 5 this term is ‘Evolution’. We will be learning about how fossils are formed, the individual contributions of Charles Darwin and Mary Anning to our understanding of the earth, how animals have adapted to their environments and the human impact on the earth.
