Weeks are passing so quickly and the Year 5 children are continuing to learn brilliantly as we move towards the end of the Spring term but we still have two more weeks and plenty of exciting learning to fit in.
It is wonderful to see how much the children are growing and developing into confident individuals. In Year 5, expectations become higher and children begin to feel they have more responsibilities. As teachers, we do not only teach subjects, we also support children in becoming respectful and responsible individuals. Respect is one of our school values and this week we have been focusing on it. During assembly we talked about what respect looks like and why it is important. Please continue these conversations at home as well. Small actions can make a big difference. For example, saying good morning when passing someone, waiting patiently while adults are speaking before joining a conversation, listening carefully when others are talking, using polite words such as please and thank you, holding the door open for others and taking care of shared spaces and equipment. School and parents are on the same page, working together to help our children grow into thoughtful individuals and build a positive future together.
As always, it has been a week filled with lots of learning. In Maths, after completing our multiplication and division unit, we have started our new unit on multiplying fractions. The children are learning how to multiply fractions by integers and how to find a fraction of a whole. Please find the worksheet here. Practising what they have learned during the week at home will always help them to embed their understanding. Week 3 worksheets
Next week in Maths, we will continue building on this learning by using a fraction of an amount to find the whole and finding the whole when given a part. We will also explore equivalent fractions and decimals, including tenths and wholes and equivalent fractions and decimals with tenths and hundredths.
In English, we drafted our journey stories and then revised them by learning how to use metaphors and personification. Because these are journey stories, we also focused on adding time and place fronted adverbials to help guide the reader through the adventure. We finished the week by designing the pages and layout for our picture journey books. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be editing and publishing our stories.

In STEM, Year 5 are really enjoying our unit on the life cycles of living things. This week we explored the life cycles of insects and amphibians and learned about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. We were also very excited to see that some of our pinto beans have started to grow. The children measured the height of their plants and plotted the measurements on the line graphs in their books. We will continue doing this over the next couple of weeks so that they can practise collecting data and plotting it accurately.
We have Family Friday on 20th March in the morning after the register for half an hour and we hope to see many of you there sharing in what we have been learning.
Fuji and Olympus will continue their P.E. lessons on Thursday, so please remember to bring P.E. kits. Sagarmatha will continue their swimming lessons on Thursday.
Have a lovely weekend.
