Despite being a short week of just four days, it has certainly been a very busy one in Year 5! The children have been working incredibly hard across all subjects and have shown great focus and enthusiasm throughout.

The cold weather has certainly arrived, so please make sure children are coming into school with coats and suitable clothing to keep them warm throughout the day.

This week in English, after planning their information texts, the children have been busy drafting their writing. They explored how to use parenthesis to add extra detail and information to their sentences, as well as how to prove or support the facts they include. They also learned about different styles of endings for information texts. We will continue drafting and begin revising our writing next week.

In Maths, as we moved into our multiplication and division unit, the children learned about prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. They have shown a good understanding of these concepts, but being confident with times tables is absolutely crucial so please continue to encourage your children to practise their times tables at home. Next week, we will be looking at multiplying and dividing numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000. Maths Autumn 2 Week 3 sheets

The children have really been enjoying our Art sessions. They have been exploring different techniques such as sponging, crayon-resist and dry-brush, and experimenting with oil pastels, watercolours and colouring pencils. They have created a wonderful collection of coloured and textured papers to use for collage, discussing their artistic choices along the way.

We are also continuing our geography topic, Explosive Nature, with learning abut tectonic plates, earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as the devastating effects they can cause.

In STEM, we learnt about different energy types. Children also had the opportunity to use some measurement tools – lux meters to measure light level, and aenometers to measure wind speed – and we explored where in our school grounds would be effective places to put a solar panel or wind turbine.

This term in Guided Reading, we have started reading The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Everyone has been enjoying this classic fantasy novel, which explores themes of bravery, redemption and the battle between good and evil.

We hope the children enjoy their long weekend!
