Welcome back to the final half term of Year 5! We have started Summer 2 with lots of exciting new topics, including poetry, cam toys and microbes. The children have returned with a fantastic attitude and are already showing great enthusiasm for their learning.
English
This week, children have begun their new writing project on poetry. They explored a range of different poem types, including haikus, free verse, kenning poems and acrostic poems. The children enjoyed identifying the features of each style and experimenting with creating their own poems.
Maths
In Maths, we have been focusing on converting units of measure, including kilometres to metres, litres to millilitres, and kilograms to grams. We have also started learning about volume, using practical examples to develop our understanding.

Science
Our new Science topic is Microbes. Children have been learning about different types of microbes, including viruses, bacteria and fungi. They enjoyed designing their own microbe, thinking carefully about its appearance and characteristics.
Design and Technology
We have introduced our new Design and Technology unit on cam mechanisms. Children explored how cams work and created a basic cam mechanism of their own. Over the coming weeks, they will apply this knowledge to design and build their own cams.
PSHE
In PSHE, we have been discussing change and how people can cope with changes in their lives. Children shared their experiences and explored positive strategies for managing change and uncertainty.
RE
In RE, children have been writing poems about commitment, reflecting on what commitment means and how it can be demonstrated in different aspects of life and faith.
PE
We have started our new PE unit on Rounders. Children have been learning the rules of the game, practising key skills and taking part in a variety of games. It has been wonderful to see their teamwork and sportsmanship developing already.
We are looking forward to another exciting week of learning and discovery next week.
