This term is already flying by!

We started the week by opening our first English topic, where we are writing myths. Children read various examples of myths inspired by Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse mythology, and are starting to come up with ideas for their own mythical tales. We also looked at describing characters, and used relative clauses to embellish the descriptions of our epic heroes.

We also continued reading Malamander, meeting characters like Violet Parma and Lady Kraken. I wonder where our adventure will take these characters next!

In maths, we continued our place value unit, which is fundamental to almost every area of maths we teach in year 5 and 6. Children were reminded how to compare and order large numbers, as well as estimate their position on a number line. Worksheets can be found here: Maths W3 Sheets.

In history, we started learning about who the Anglo Saxons were, and what motivated them to migrate from mainland Europe to Britain. We categorised these motivations as push factors (reasons to leave their home country) and pull factors (things that attract them to the new country).

Ending the week with STEM, we were visited by aliens! The aliens left behind some tasty offerings: alien soup (coffee grounds, salt and water) and alien cereal (pasta, paperclips and sugar). Because these mixtures weren’t very human-friendly, we spent our lesson trying to separate them with tools like sieves, magnets and filter paper. This wasn’t enough to separate the salt from the water, so we will continue to learn next week about separating solutes from their solvents.

Another exciting event this week was the first forest school session of the year. The children had a fantastic time exploring the autumnal environment, hunting for bugs and building dens. What a great afternoon out!

Reminders:

  • Thank you for your continued support with ensuring children are coming to school with the correct PE kit and uniform, and the correct clothes for forest school. Generally, children are arriving to school smart and well-prepared for the day, which helps our week to run smoothly. A polite reminder that PE kit is a plain white t-shirt and black/navy blue shorts or trousers, plus shoes which would be suitable for both indoor and outdoor PE.
  • Giving children daily time to read aloud, read independently, and practice times tables on TTRS are all incredibly valuable for their ongoing progress at school.

Have a fantastic weekend and enjoy the sun!
