We have had an exciting week in Year 5, continuing to dig deep into our Dynamic Coasts project and delving further into our tale, Running on Empty!
This week, we continued our project for this half term: Dynamic Coasts! Our enquiry question is: in what ways is Hunstanton under threat? Our focus this week was on continental and tidal islands. In English, we found out even more about the protagonist of Running on Empty, AJ, and how he feels about his life! It has been really valuable for our empathy skills to consider his perspective! Maths saw us begin to focus on multiplication and division, with a spotlight on the grid and contracted methods; in PSHCE we worked hard to explore friendship skills, including different ways we make friends and how to resolve conflicts! Finally, in STEM, we took a close look at how flowering plants reproduce asexually, creating information stickers for strawberries, potatoes and onions!
This week’s spellings were focused on the ‘air’ phoneme:
Fare/Fair There/Their/They’re Various Therefore

Next Week:
Next week, we will continue multiplication and division in our maths learning as well as continue to explore Running on Empty in English and Guided Reading! In STEM, we will begin to explore the life cycles of different animals with a spotlight on insects and amphibians! Geography will see us take a closer look at the coastal areas of the UK! Our daily SPAG activities will be focused on punctuating sentences accurately and in PSHCE we will conclude our unit on healthy friendships and family relationships! Our phoneme focus in spellings will be ‘er’.

Home Learning
- Read for 30 minutes each day
- Practise times tables for 10 minutes each day
- Practise and revise year 3-4 and year 5-6 spellings that we have covered this spring term, so far, to ensure they have been transferred from working memory to long term memory. You can find these spellings here:
Challenges
We would like to set children some challenges to complete at home to extend their learning from this week!
- Geography: can you find out about another tidal island in the world? Research the island and present information about it using correct geography terminology, such as ‘it is situated north of…’!
- English: this week we thought about different dreams AJ has and how balloons can we used as a metaphor to describe them popping. Can you think of another metaphor to describe dreams and how they disappear sometimes?
- STEM:
- Spanish: Our focus this half term is on clothes. Can you create a catalogue with pictures matched to the correct vocabulary for clothes?
Notices:
PE
The children will continue to have outdoor PE on a Wednesday so it is important to remember correct kit!
Please ensure children have weather appropriate PE uniform in school. This includes a hair band to tie back long hair and tape to cover any ear-rings that cannot be removed.
Forest School
Next week, the children will continue to have forest school with Mr Longden! Please make sure they have weather-appropriate clothing to wear!
Olympus class on Tuesdays
Fuji class on Wednesdays
Sagarmatha class on Thursdays
Mobile Telephones
Only children who have permission to walk home alone may bring a mobile telephone to school. It must be given to the class teacher at the start of each day and will be returned at home time.
Have an enjoyable weekend!
