The first week of Summer term is already over! We have hit the ground running this week, launching into our new ‘Inventions’ project which will be exploring the ways in which technology is used to invent things. You can download the project knowledge map here: Y4 Sum 1 Inventions project overview

We have also started an exciting new STEM learning unit on ‘Light’. Today we were exploring the properties of light with a couple of investigations. We looked at how we need light to see and proved this using some objects inside a cardboard box. We also learnt that light is a spectrum of many colours. Why not download and have a go at making a whizzer wheel at home to prove this? Science-Making-a-Whizzer-Wheel

In English, we have started with a unit on rhyming poems. We used Joseph Coelho’s book ‘Werewolf Club Rules’ as a springboard for creating our own rhyming couplets.

In Maths, we have started to learn about division. While we believe it is important to learn a written method, we also don’t want children to become over reliant on these so we have started the unit with mental methods for subtraction. If I know that I can divide 45 by 9, then I can also divide 450 by 9. This will help me to solve 459 divided by 9, as it can be ‘chunked’ into 450 and 9. We have called this the ‘chunking’ method. The worksheets are attached here. Maths – Summer 1 – Week 1 – Dividing by Grouping and Chunking
