In Year 4 this week, we have been busy working on our shadow puppet theatres, writing imaginative stories and continuing to build our knowledge of fractions.
In Topic, we have added the finishing touches to our shadow puppet theatres and have made our puppets ready for our performances. We learnt how to create static puppets and how to add detail by cutting out small parts within the shape of the puppet. Next week we will be celebrating our learning by performing our shadow puppet shows to children in other classes.
Our shadow puppets and theatres came in handy for STEM this week where we learnt that shadows occur when an object blocks light. We then used our shadow puppet theatres and puppets to investigate how shadows change when we move the light source. The children discovered that the closer the light source, the larger the shadow is and the further away the shadow, the smaller the shadow is. This was very useful knowledge as the children learnt that they could create different effects with their shadow puppets just by changing how far the torch is away from them.
In English, the children wrote exciting and imaginative stories about a picture for our Writing Showcase. They came up with all sorts of creative ideas and wrote detailed stories using all the features they have learnt about over the course of the year. In English next week, we will be writing play scripts to go with our shadow puppet theatre shows. In reading, we have been focusing on developing our comprehension skills and answered questions about a range of texts.
In Maths, we have been learning how to multiply fractions by whole numbers when the answer is greater than one. We learnt how to use number lines and partitioning to do this. The maths sheets for this week are attached below. We will continue this work next week. We have been practising times tables daily and will continue to do so again next week. Please continue to encourage your child to practise their times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars at home. We have been really impressed with the progress the children have made.
Next week:
In Guided Reading, we will be reading chapter 3 of Stig of the Dump.
We will be thinking about and discussing the following questions and tasks:
- Summarise what happened in this part of the chapter in four sentences or less.
- “Bother!” said Barney. “Now what?”
- What do you think the characters will do next? Justify your answer.
We are looking forward to celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next Friday with our whole-school street party lunch!
