In Year 4 this week, we have been learning the story of Perseus and Medusa, practising our tennis skills and investigating light and dark

In Topic, we have been learning about theatre design and using what we have found out to design our own shadow puppet theatres. We will start making these next week – if you have any cardboard boxes at home that we could use, we would be very grateful if you could bring them in at the beginning of next week.

In English, we have been learning the myth of Perseus and Medusa. We spent time learning the myth using a story map and made up actions to remember it. We have been practising the story and performed it in groups to the class. We are learning it off by heart to help us understand the structure of a myth. This will help us next week when we innovate the story and write our own version with a different monster. In our writing journal this week, we have been focusing on using and punctuating questions accurately.

Here are some pictures of the children learning and acting out the story of Perseus and Medusa.

In Maths, we have continued to learn about scale factor and have focused on representing scale factors in different ways. We started the week by multiplying and dividing by scale factors and used our times tables knowledge to help us. We then learnt about how scale factors can be represented and matched representations of the same scale factor together. These cards are included in the link below. We finished the week with a problem-solving session where the children had to work out how far different animals had jumped in an inter-species jumping competition using the scale factor and their multiplication and division facts to help them.

Next week we will be learning about fractions. We will be making the links between multiplication, division and fractions very clear for the children so they can build on this knowledge for this new learning. Please encourage and support your child to practise their times tables at home. We are continuing to encourage the children to use Times Tables Rockstars.

L2 Matching Cards

We have been learning about light and dark in Science this week. We started by predicting which colours would be easier and harder to see in a dark space. We set up cardboard boxes with holes at one end where the children could shine a torch and look through. At the other end of the box, the children placed a coloured piece of paper and investigated which colours were easier and harder to see. We discovered that the lighter, brighter colours were easier to see than the darker colours.

In PE, we have been practising tennis skills. We have been focusing on passing a ball to a partner and using markers to help us be accurate with this. We have been applying these skills in rallies.

Next week:

In Guided Reading, we will be reading the second half of chapter 2 of Stig of the Dump.

We will be thinking about the following tasks and questions:

  • Summarise what happened in this part of the chapter in four sentences or less.
  • Why do you think Barney was annoyed with Stig when he took apart the tins? Was he too quick to tell him he had ruined them? How did this issue get sorted out?

PE Timetable:

Monday – Thames

Tuesday – Nile, Amazon

Thursday – Nile, Amazon

Friday – Thames

Please make sure your children have their PE kit in school. If your child has long hair, please ensure it is tied up (or they come in with a hair tie) on the days they have PE.
