It has been another busy week in Year 4.
This week we have continued to develop our knowledge of Ancient Egypt and have worked very hard to finish our non-chronological reports. Look out for them appearing in our classroom windows next week! We worked in groups to complete an expert jigsaw where each person in the group went away to find out about what lives were like for children in Ancient Egypt and then reported back. We found out lots about what it was like at school for children, what their homes were like and what pets they had – baboons, gazelles and even lions! We have continued to enjoy and learn through our playful enquiry. The children have been applying what they have learnt when building pyramids and creating messages in hieroglyphics.
In English, the children wrote exciting and imaginative stories about a picture for our Writing Showcase. They came up with all sorts of creative ideas and used lots of rich, descriptive language for their reader to enjoy. In reading, we have been focusing on developing our comprehension skills and answered questions about a range of texts.
In Maths, we have been practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and using these skills to solve word problems. Next week we will be learning addition strategies and using them to add 4-digit numbers.
We are learning about fossils in Science, and Nile class had a go at making their own mould and cast fossils of leaves. Amazon and Thames have this to look forward to next week.
We had our last TasteEd session for the term this week. We focused on our sense of taste and made a Greek salad, which had a balance of the 5 different tastes in it (salty, sweet, sour, unami, bitter). Lots of the children tried something new and some have begun to develop a taste for feta cheese!
Extra information:
All children should now have a reading diary where yourself or your child can tell us about the books they have been reading at home. Each week we ask that these come to school for teachers to look at, on the same day children will also have chance to pick a new book. Book swap days will happen as below:
Amazon – Thursday
Nile – Friday
Thames – Friday
Guided Reading – next week we will be reading Chapter 5 of The Firework Makers Daughter.
PE – next week we will have our last PE sessions before the half term break. We will ask the children to take their kits home to be washed over the holiday.
