Who was a better leader- Augustus or Julius Ceasar?

It’s been another busy week in Thames, Nile and Amazon, with lots going on all over the school. The children rose to the challenge of welcoming our important visitors, and were so sensible and considerate while the swimming pool was being constructed. The teachers and learning coaches are very proud of them. Despite all the excitement, we’ve still been getting on with lots of excellent learning.

English

In English, the children have been busy learning a variety of techniques to add to their toolkit; they are now almost ready to start writing their free verse poems! We particularly enjoyed making all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds in the classroom, which we then described using onomatopoeia. This linked nicely to the work we are doing in STEM at the moment, as we are looking at the science of sound. The children stretched elastic bands using their fingers, cups and boxes, and strummed them to see how the tightness of the bands affected the pitch of the sound they made. The bar charts the children drew using their results were very impressive.

Maths

Maths lessons saw a continued focus on times tables, ready for the times table check in the Summer term. In addition to our usual TTRS sessions, we’ve been looking at the 9, 7, 11 and 12 times tables. The children have been great at spotting the patterns in these times tables, and discussing similarities with the 2s, 3s and 6s. Don’t forget to keep practising your times tables at home!

Foundation Subjects

Art and History this week revolved around our current project: the Ancient Romans. We honed our pencil shading skills while producing sketches of statues, and compared Julius Caesar and Augustus to try and decide which was the better leader. As a patron of the arts, the emperor Augustus would have been very pleased with our drawings! As for our other foundation subjects, Buddhist beliefs surrounding ‘change’ were the focus of our PRE lesson. In PSHE we’re continuing to consider teamwork and listening skills, while in PE we’ve been doing some dancing.

Trip- Museum of Classics

We are still looking for parent volunteers for our class trip coming up in two weeks, if you can join us please lets one of the year four teachers know. – Thank you

We’ve made it to the halfway point of the half term now, and can’t wait for all that’s in store for the next three weeks!
