This week’s learning in Year 3:
Maths/English/learning challenges
In Maths we’ve been making connections between the 2, 4 and 8 times tables and using our knowledge of multiples of 10 to solve related calculations (e.g. If I know 4 x 7 = 28, I also know 4 x 70 = 280). We’ve been reviewing our understanding of multiplying by ten, reminding ourselves that it is not just a case of ‘adding a zero’! Please find some reviews to consolidate your learning here: Y3 Sp2 MATHS W2 Independent Learning
In English we continued to enjoy “The Midnight Fair”. We used our previous experience of staging scenes from the book and our work on noun phrases to draft a five line free verse about going to this fair. In Guided reading, we follow Roz the Robot’s journey with great interest and it has prompted questions such as “Do robots have feelings?” from the children. We have read to Chapter 21 so far.
In Science, we have continued to develop our understanding of diet and nutrition by looking at the concepts of a ‘portion’ of different types of foods and measuring out exactly what a ‘portion’ looks like of eg. rice, carrots, pasta, butter. We have also learned about the Eat Well Plate as a tool for creating a balanced diet.
Key vocabulary this week: balanced (diet), nutrition, portion, free verse.
Next week
We are exploring the subsequent chapters of “The Wild Robot” in Guided Reading, so please find next week’s Guided Reading focus text here if you would like to review the text before the week starts: The Wild Robot Week 3
In English, we will be starting a new book, “Shackleton’s Journey“, which links to our current work on climates in Geography. We will start with recruiting our crew for our journey in the Endeavour, using persuasive writing persuasive writing, including expanded noun phrases, and subordinating clauses. Hopefully we will recruit enough intrepid explorers!
In Maths, we will move onto multiplying two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, using understanding of the distributive property of multiplication.
