This week’s learning in Year 3:
In Maths we’ve been built on our understanding of the inter-relatedness of times tables facts and our understanding of multiplying by ten to develop into mutliplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number. This week we have been learning about how understanding the distributive law of multiplication can help us do this and how it can help us understand what is actually happening with the numbers as we multiply. You can review how to use the distributive law for multiplication here. Our independent learning practice from this week is here: Y3 Sp2 W3 MATHS independent learning
In English we started to read “Shackelton’s Journey”, a wonderful large format non-fiction book which explains the background to Shackleton’s brave adventure to Antarctica, as well as the journey and the crew’s experiences once there. We have used the book to focus on persuasive writing this week – making posters persuading people to join the adventure!
In Guided Reading, we have continue to enjoy “The Wild Robot” and have read up to Chapter 24, The Mother, in which Brightbill the gosling is following Roz the Robot everywhere! We continued to discuss whether robots can have emotions and how this might link to AI as it develops.
In Science, we have reviewed our understanding of vertebrates and invertebrates and classified some animals according to those simple criteria, including understanding the idea of an exoskeleton and discovering that crustacea don’t just live in water!
Next week
We are exploring the subsequent chapters of “The Wild Robot” in Guided Reading, so please find next week’s Guided Reading focus text here if you would like to review the text before the week starts: Y3 Sp2 W4 GUIDED READING The Wild Robot
In English, we will be using “Shackelton’s Journey” to explore what makes a particularly persuasive speech – specifically looking at the emotive techniques that can be used. We will be trying out writing our own speeches to convince others of a specific point of view.
In Maths, we will continue multiplying two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, using understanding of the distributive property of multiplication and moving towards securing the formal written method, with this background understanding of number.
Reminders and requests
PE – please ensure your child has a complete PE kit in school at all time – shorts/PE trousers, PE shirt and trainers. Thank you!
Geography – thank you to parents who have offered to support the children’s learning with their expertise. We will be arranging this for later in the term in class time.
