Although it has been a shorter week, this week has still been packed full of fantastic learning!
In English, building on the story of ‘The Journey’ we have been exploring what a refugee is and the difference between a refugee, a migrant and an asylum seeker. We had a very exciting live session with a man named Jacob (who works for a refugee charity) and his friend Omid who is a refugee from Iran. Omid told us all about his journey and the difficulties he had to face whilst seeking asylum. He also answered lots of our questions. We then went on to look at how the media portray refugees and the children came to the conclusion that a lot of bias and fake news gives refugees a negative reputation. The children spoke about how this was unfair and how they could write a report that shares facts not bias.
In maths, we have continued our addition topic of practicing some different strategies for mental addition. We have been looking specifically at the adjustment method and how we use this in a range of situations including with near doubles! Some of our maths lessons this week had worksheets, while some were based on journaling – all of them had challenges, so you can view the worksheets and the challenges here if you’d like to have another go.
In guided reading, we continued with our book Race to the Frozen North by Catherine Johnson. We have learnt a little bit about Matthew’s childhood and how he had to run away from home to escape his abusive step-mother. Now he has reached Washington DC and we are excited to see what happens to him next!

As the weather gets colder, please can everyone remember to bring a warm coat to school. Gloves, scarves and hats can also be worn at playtimes and lunch times.

Next Week:
In English, beginning to write our own speeches about refugees and what people can do to help. This idea has come from the children’s engagement with supporting refugees throughout their journey.
In maths, we are now going to start at looking into different strategies we can use when subtracting numbers.
