This week’s learning in Year 3:

Happy New Year! We are very excited to be back at school and to have started our new project, Stone Age to Iron Age!

English

In English, we started exploring the book, ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. We focused on inference and justification in our first lesson, examining the first few pages of the story and thinking about when we think the story is set and why (without knowing the title at the time!). We then revisited how to use conjunctions to join clauses in our writing, remembering to use ‘2 for 1’.

Maths

We started learning about mental strategies to solve addition and subtraction questions. We learnt about the adjusting strategy for addition as a mental method this week, which helps us to solve addition questions without having to use column addition. If you would like to consolidate learning, the worksheets can be found here: Maths Sp1 W1

Guided Reading

We started a new book for guided reading, ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King. This week, we used inference to consider what Stig’s cave might look like, as well as working on retrieval with ‘find and copy’.

We are starting chapter 2 next week, and the reading can be found here for pre-reading: Stig Chapter 2 (part 1)

Chapter 1 of the book can also be found here: Stig of the Dump Chapter 1

History

We started our new project, Stone Age to Iron Age, in history this week. We learnt about how to place different historical events in chronological order on a timeline and were shocked by how long ago this time period was!

PE

In PE, we started cricket lessons, which we will have every Friday this half term. We had great fun learning cricket ball skills, such as how to bowl and throw overarm.

Reminders

Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school. If they do not, they cannot take part in PE lessons.

Forest School starts next week, so please ensure your child has correct kit, including wellies, warm layers, a waterproof coat and waterproof trousers.

Have a lovely weekend,

Year 3 Team
