This week’s learning in Year 3

What an exciting week of snow and Christmas excitement! A reminder that we break up for the Christmas holidays on Wednesday at 1.30pm.

English

This week, we have published our portal stories on lined paper by placing together every part that we wrote throughout the half term. We have sent these home so you can read the fantastic pieces of writing produced by Year 3 and be transported into another biome through a portal!

Maths

This week in maths, we have used column addition and subtraction to solve Christmas word problems. We’ve had great fun solving questions about elves and Santa, finding the answers to Christmas jokes by solving the number clues and unlocking codes to find out which elf stole Mrs Claus’ pudding!

Guided Reading – Journey to the River Sea, by Eva Ibbotson

We started chapter 6 of the book this week.  For an overview of the book, please have a look at this: Journey to the River Sea overview

Geography

In geography, we created our posters and filmed our plays and speeches to help stop deforestation. We have loved considering how social action can help us to raise awareness about issues such as deforestation and climate change, and these posters, speeches and plays have been really powerful!

PSHCE – Relationships & Sex Education

This week, Year 3 continued discussing the changes we go through during puberty, as well as learning about hygiene.

Coats, winter shoes, hats and gloves

As the weather has turned much cooler now, we would ask that the children have a warm coat, hat, gloves, scarf and winter shoes, as the ice is very slippery.

Our team has grown!

This week, we welcomed Ms Fisher, who will be teaching Maple class during Mrs Tutchener’s maternity leave. Last week, Ms Bradshaw joined Oak class as their teacher on Thursdays and Fridays.  We are very excited about our growing team!

At home learning

Responding to requests from some of our parents, below are a few links to some useful online learning sites:

English – choose from a large range of spelling, reading or grammar activities

Maths – review how to do column subtraction with 3 digit numbers and exchanging, particularly with a zero value in columns; then practice using these calculations: Y3 Au2 W6 column subtraction with exchange

Science – extend understanding of the life cycle of flowering plants by learning in more detail just how seeds become new plants.

Spanish – building on our naming of animals, learn what noises they make in Spanish!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Year 3 Team
