For the past two weeks Year 3 have been honing their debating skills, with increased confidence and articulate speech. We have investigated two topics of debate: School is where you learn best and Was Britain right to invade India? These have been challenging discussions. During the first week the children became familiar with the genre and features of debate, applying them to the familiar context of home learning. In the second week, the children used their research to help them debate the impact of British colonial rule in India. This has proved both a challenging and rich topic of conversation.
In Maths, we have been applying knowledge of strategies for addition to problem solving and investigations. The children particularly liked the ‘build it up’ investigation where they had different target numbers to reach. They were also really good at solving missing number problems, and many children tackled the more difficult ‘extra spicy’ tasks too. Year 3 have continued to thoroughly enjoy our Art lessons with Mrs Smith, who has been teaching us how to draw and paint miniatures. The children have been paying very close attention to detail and have developed their mango patterns by applying some of their mindful drawing techniques. Their teachers have been very impressed with the high quality outcomes that the children have produced so far in this project.
In other areas of the curriculum, we have been learning about changing state in Science. The children were set the task of melting an ice cube to retrieve the hidden treasure (a marble and some lego!). They reflected on the activity with some brilliant thoughts about how solids become liquids and how liquids become gases.
Finally, in RE, the children have been learning about Sikhism. We performed our own Amrit ceremony and have begun to find out about the significance of the 5 K’s to Sikhs.

Spellings sheets ed spellings
English – we will be bringing to life an Indian marketplace and developing our own characters and narratives.
Maths – we will begin learning about subtraction and applying this to reasoning and problem solving activities.

The morning drop off window for Year 3 is 8.25-8.35am. All classroom doors will be locked by 8.40am, and children will need to be registered at the office to ensure correct attendance is recorded.
