This week’s learning in Year 3:

Maths/English/learning challenges

In Maths we’ve been making connections between the 3 times tables and the 6 times tables. We’ve been exploring adjacent multiples and considering “if we know x, then we can also know y” when working out calculations involving the 3 and 6 times tables.  Please find some reviews to consolidate your learning here: Y3 Sp2 W1 MATHS

In English we are diving into a new book “The Midnight Fair” which is a beautiful no-word illustrated book. We’ve been using drama and freeze frames to explore plot prediction sing evidence from the text. Within this, we’ve been refining our use of noun phrases. In Guided reading, we are enjoying Roz’s journey in “The Wild Robot” through class discussion, drama, mind maps as well as writing mini story chapters. We’ve been focusing on the techniques that make this book so engaging to read.

In Science, we have been learning the meaning of the key terms herbivore, carnivore and omnivore and using this understanding to sort a range of animals into groups, using Venn Diagrams.  We have also started to learn about the difference between diet and nutrition.

Key vocabulary this week: multiplicand, multiplier, product, adjacent multiples, determiner, adjective, noun, noun phrase, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, diet, nutrition.

Next week

We are exploring the next few chapters of “The Wild Robot” in Guided Reading, so please find next week’s Guided Reading focus text here if you would like to review the text before the week starts: Y3 Sp2 W2 GUIDED READING

In English, we will focus on creating exciting expanded noun phrases to put into short poems. If you would like to support this, please explore determiners, powerful adjectives and nouns to create vivid imagery. For e.g “ The sad dog” à “The wretched, desolate hound”.

In addition, next week is World Book Day on 2 March! As a school, we are not dressing up but investigating and sharing picture books from around the world.  The children are asked to bring in their favourite book from home – in any language which they read!

In Maths, we will move into making connections between the 2 and 4 times tables, understanding multiples of 10, so please continue to support your child with these – Times Tables Rockstars is fantastic practice!

Reminders

PE – lease ensure your child has a clean and complete PE kit in school at all time – shorts/PE trousers, PE shirt and trainers.  Thank you!

WORLD BOOK DAY – please can the children bring with them their favourite book, in any language!

With best wishes
