Welcome back everyone!!! It’s been wonderful having all the children back in school this week and everybody has loved being back with their friends and teachers, as well as meeting new ones.

As always, the introductory week of the term has been all about learning how to learn and re-establishing rules and routines. In year 3, each day has focussed on one of the school’s five core values; Monday was respect, Tuesday was courage, Wednesday was trust, Thursday was gratitude and Friday was empathy. To explore the meaning and power of the values we’ve been singing, acting, writing, playing, drawing, reading and more – somehow we even found time to do some maths as well!

In English, alongside exploring the values of our school through discussion and role play we took time to write and publish bio poems, a piece of poetry all about ourselves, our likes, aspirations, fears and dreams. This was the perfect opportunity to show off our vocabulary skills to our new teachers, generating lots of ideas and adjectives before we went off to write our poems. We also began every day with handwriting – we were keen to show our teachers we’d been using our handwriting homework books over the summer and they were all certainly impressed!!!

In maths, we had a bit of a prologue to the proper beginning of our place value topic next week, getting used to using our new maths journals and playing some carefully chosen games to recap content from year 2 and practise our fluency in the mathematical operations we already know. Some of our favourite maths games of the week include Don’t Roll a Six and Naughty and Nice – hopefully now we’re ready to dive in headfirst next week.

In the afternoons, we got to do playful enquiry almost every day. We’re so lucky to be moving back towards more normal times and have the full use of our fantastic learning street again, complete with Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, pyramids, excavation area and reading for pleasure section. We can’t wait to get properly stuck in next week.

Thank you to all children, parents and families in year 3 for making the first week back such a pleasure.

Wishing you all a restful weekend.

Year 3 Team

Reminders:

In key stage 2, the children need to bring their own healthy snacks to school, usually a piece of fruit or a vegetable.

Please can PE kits be brought in as soon as possible so that they can be stored in the classroom for the half-term. Remember to label all kit so as to prevent confusion. PE kit should be a white top, dark shorts, and trainers.

Next Week:

In English, we begin exploring our Ancient Egypt topic with a particular focus on adjectives.

In maths, number and place value is the focus, looking at different representations of 2 and 3-digit numbers.
