What a wonderful week of learning we have had! Although in-class teaching was a bit shorter this week due to the strikes, we were able to dig deeply into different aspects of our learning. We had a great talk on Friday last week from Elizabeth Harrington to discuss flooding and climate change, which linked perfectly with our geography lesson this week on flooding in the UK and extreme weather around the world.

In English, we started looking at different persuasive speeches and the features needed to write a successful speech. In maths, we continued learning about multiplying a 2-digit number by 1-digit, which included working together in a problem solving lesson and focusing on using distributive law to help us. In STEM, we learnt about how muscles work in pairs to allow movement and maintain posture. We also investigated whether people who do more sport have stronger muscles.

Maths and Spelling

In Spelling we have been focusing on the /o/ sound. We have looked at the <o>  spelling, as in Tom, on and stop, as well as the <a> spelling, such as in what, swat and wasp. Some words to practice are: bottle, wander and wash.

In Maths, we explored problem solving journaling individually and in groups.

Next Week

English: We are continuing to learn about persuasive speeches and beginning to write our own from the point of view of Shackleton, trying to get people to join him on his expedition.

Maths: we are continuing to look at multiplication, ensuring that we are secure on the written method.

Science: we are exploring the connection between muscles, lungs and breathing.

Guided Reading: we are going to continue reading The Wild Robot. A copy of the relevant reading can be found here: The Wild Robot Sp2 W5

Notices/ Reminders

Please bring in empty milk cartons or water bottles on Monday, as we will be making rain gauges in Geography!

Just a friendly reminder that all children need to have a full PE kit in school, we teach PE outside so please ensure that PE kits include warmer clothing if needed. Currently, all Year 3 classes have PE on a Tuesday and Friday.

Finally, Year 3 Cake Sale is this coming Friday, 24th March.  It will take place by the World Gates on the way out of school.  Perhaps time for a Friday treat?!
