With each passing week, we find ourselves deeper in the Amazon rainforest. This week, we’ve continued reading The Explorer and have centered our learning around the four main characters: Fred, Con, Lila and Max. On Monday and Tuesday we spent a lot of time getting to know them and discussing how they would react to various scenarios, using this content to build on our use of correct punctuation in sentences. On Wednesday we then created our own character to insert into the story and developed them on Thursday. Friday saw us looking at the blurb of The Explorer as well as several other stories so that we could begin to think about how our character will fit with the setting. In guided reading, we read chapter 2 of The Firework Maker’s Daughter and thought about the author’s intentions and how Pullman creates certain effects.

In maths, we have continued our recap of column subtraction. Lots of us remember our exchanging now and have been able to extend our learning by creating our own column subtraction word problems that involve exchanging into the hundreds column and beyond! Those of us that felt unsure earlier on are getting back into the swing of it and feel a lot more confident, all in time for year 4.

The big event this week was of course on Wednesday – sports day! It wasn’t quite the same without our family spectators, but nonetheless all the teams gave their best and everybody had a great time. It was a brilliant way to celebrate all our hard work in PE together. Team spirit was evident throughout the day. Well done to all the teams, particularly the blue team, who just pipped the others to the post on points.

Our science this week involved monitoring the little beans we planted. They are not quite beanstalks with giants at the top yet, but here’s hoping. In geography, we researched the different climates all around the world using iPads and found that the weather and temperature in different countries is not always what you might expect! In computing, we discussed how to identify appropriate content on the internet and in video games and had some practise in using ICT to record our ideas.

Next Week:

English – Using the character we created this week, we write a story involving the setting from The Explorer. Our grammar focus remains coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

Maths – After recapping column subtraction, we move to two-step addition and subtraction problems to best prepare us for year 4.

Wishing you a restful weekend.
