How is it already the end of the second week of term!? We are all extremely impressed with the year 3 children as they have continued to give all their learning full dedication and have certainly not forgotten all the remembering of the school values we did last week. There have been plenty of bronzes, silvers and even a few golds given out this week – it feels like there will be more next week with the way things are going!
In English, this week we focussed on adjectives while using the content of our Ancient Egypt topic as a springboard. We’ve been reading and investigating the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and then writing sentences using powerful adjectives about it. This leads us neatly into next week’s writing of non-chronological reports on this subject.
In maths, we are now knee-deep in number and place value. Monday and Tuesday were spent representing 2 and 3-digit numbers and we consolidated and explored our understanding of them throughout the week, using dienes, counters, part-whole models and more to represent our ideas. The week culminated in us using our reasoning skills in relation to 2 and 3-digit numbers.
In science, we began our topic of rocks by getting our geology hats on and investigating different types of rocks, in particular deciphering whether they were natural or manmade. In RE, our Sikhism topic began and we explored the concept of belonging, making maps of ourselves and where we belong to. In PSHE we discussed our ideas about what our dream and nightmare schools would be like, linking this to what we like about our own school and what we might change if we could. Fortunately, no one suggested getting rid of all the teachers – phew!!!!
Two very exciting things happened this week. First of all, we’ve got our learning street back! We couldn’t use it as much as usual last year due to COVID-19 restrictions, so it’s been wonderful to see it back in full swing for playful enquiry. We’ve got an excavation area, pottery, mummy-wrapping, hieroglyphic writing, deity researching/creating and pyramid building!!!
We also had our very first TasteEd lesson. It was all about peppers – some us tried them for the very first time and found we liked them!
Wishing you all a restful weekend.
Year 3 Team
Reminders:
Our family boards in the classrooms are growing. Could everybody please bring in a label that celebrates languages spoken at home e.g. ‘Hello’ in home language or a key phrase, written by the child or a family member? If you haven’t already provided a family photo, please do so! We want everyone to be included.
In key stage 2, the children need to bring their own healthy snacks to school, usually a piece of fruit or a vegetable.
Next Week:
In English, we will be writing non-chronological reports, with a grammar focus on tense.
In maths, we move on to comparing 3-digit numbers and identifying previous and next multiples of 10 and 100.
