It’s been a super week back after our half term break!

We launched our new topic ‘Power and Invasion’. We played ‘Capture the Flag’ to experience what it was like when our ‘safe’ area was invaded and felt the injustice when rules weren’t being played fairly! We had a glimpse into the injustice that people would feel if their land was being invaded.

Linking to our Topic in our English lessons, we began to explore the word ‘discrimination’, ‘injustice’ and ‘diversity’. We focused on three people in particular who stood up for justice: Rosa Parks, Malcolm X and an amazing woman called Lim who fought for women’s rights in Cambodia. We then used Benjamin  Zephaniah’s poem called ‘The British’ as inspiration for writing our own class poem, celebrating the diversity represented in our classes. We were amazed at the number of countries represented in just one class!

We then performed our poems online to other classes in the school which was a joy!

In Maths we have been exploring the column method for addition and comparing this to the bar model and the part-whole model.

We then practiced how to lay out the column method correctly and accurately. We have also been working out our brain with some rather extra spicy addition challenges: Extra spicy Maths

We especially enjoyed our Art session with Mrs Smith where we experimented using different fonts.

Next week:

  • Maths: We will be continuing our unit on addition.
  • English: We will be focusing on the story ‘The Proudest Blue’ by Ibtihaj Muhammad, S.K. Ali and Hatem Aly and using this to write diary entries, focusing on sentence composition.
  • RE: We will be introduced to Sikhism and will learn about the Amrit Ceremony.
  • Science: We will be understanding the properties of solids, liquids and gases.

Wishing you all a restful weekend.
