This week was the second week of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) fortnight, which was rounded off with the wonderful carnival and parade!

Today, we paraded through Eddington in the costumes we created with Mrs Smith in art a few weeks ago. We loved displaying our hard work through the town and celebrating everything we have done this year.

We also did some fantastic learning for STEAM this week. We focused on reflection and refraction one day, which included thinking about why reflection is useful in life, such as for seeing ambulances, seeing what we look like and being able to read your hairdresser’s name in the mirror! In the afternoon, we used mirrors for observational drawing, where we created self portraits inspired by Frida Kahlo. Another day, we investigated the question: ‘In what way does the sun protection factor affect the level of UV radiation exposure?’ We learnt about the different types of SPF and that they protect against aging (UVA) and burning (UVB). We then investigated the impact of different SPFs in the sun by putting suncreams on UV paper and seeing how long it took for the paper to turn white. We found that SPF50+ is the most effective, as it protects against the sun’s rays the most and took the longest time to fully change colour.

In English, we learnt about kenning poems and wrote our own ones on a subject of our choice. We loved creating these riddles and guessing what each other’s poem was about. We then wrote kenning poems focusing on the past year in year 3 and what we have learnt.

In maths, we learnt about symmetry, linking to our learning about reflection. We then create symmetrical art, ensuring that there was a horizontal and vertical line of symmetry in our pieces.

Reminders and next week:

Please return all class and school reading books on Monday.

A reminder that we break up for the summer holidays next Thursday at 1.30pm.

The jump up session is on Monday afternoon, which is when the children will be meeting their new teachers.

Wishing you a restful, sunny weekend.

Best wishes,

Year 3 Team
