Although it was a short week, it was filled with great excitement and meaningful learning moments. We are absolutely amazed by how well the Year 2 children have settled into the school routine and embraced the core values of our school. After returning from the two-week Easter holiday, their behaviour has been exemplary, and they have shown an impressive level of focus and enthusiasm in their learning. This week, we also began the exciting journey of Guided Reading, where the children will become literature investigators, enhancing their vocabulary and discovering fantastic new words. The first book we’ve started is the amazing “Flat Stanley”, which has already sparked a lot of interest and excitement among the children.
In Maths, our focus this week has been on measuring and the children have had so much fun taking their learning into their own hands! We explored the concept of mass, using balance scales to investigate and compare the mass of different objects. The children had a fantastic time comparing items, using both kilograms (kg) and grams (g) to measure and understand the differences. They quickly grasped how a kilogram is much heavier than a gram and were able to apply this knowledge in hands-on activities, giving them a deeper understanding of how measurements are used in the real world.
In English, we’ve relaunching our Personal Writing Project and the children have been working hard to plan their stories in a more structured way. They’ve been learning how to break down their ideas, map out their plot and develop characters with clear intentions. This structured approach to planning is helping them to feel more confident in their writing, allowing them to create more detailed and imaginative stories.
In STEM, we took an exciting walk to the UCPS forest, where we explored the microhabitats within the area. The children had a wonderful time unearthing the tiny ecosystems that exist right under their feet, examining the various plants, insects and creatures that make their home in the forest floor. They were amazed at the biodiversity in the UCPS forest habitat and it was an ideal opportunity for them to learn about the importance of these microhabitats in supporting local wildlife. This hands-on exploration brought their learning to life, encouraging them to observe closely and ask insightful questions about the natural world around them.
In Phonics this week, the children focused on the /m/ sound. The children practiced blending and segmenting words with the /m/ sound, helping to reinforce their phonetic awareness and spelling skills.

In Phonics, we are excited to be using new books this term. However, due to limited copies, we currently have 15 of each book, rather than one for every child. To ensure that all students have access to the books, it is crucial that they are returned by the specified date. We kindly ask for your support in making sure the books are returned on time so that we can swap them for others and continue with our phonics learning. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated!
Reading books: please make sure these are returned on 9.05.25 . The phonics books relate to the spellings we have been learning in class so please use them for any spelling practice alongside the reading. Please make sure you return books on the day. You will incur a £5 fine if this isn’t returned. Your child will be given their new phonics book once the old one is returned.
