It has been another wonderful week of learning in year 2. The author Matt Goodfellow treated us to a fantastic assembly which ended with year 2 helping him perform his poem “Chicken on the Roof”. We also started art lessons with Mrs Smith and looked at different techniques of drawing King Henrry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.

Summary of learning

In Maths, we have been learning how to subtract across a 10.

In English, we have introduced our new writing project- memoir writing. We came up with project goals for our own memoirs by reading Grandpa Green, The park in the dark and Wilfred Gordon Macdonald Partridge. We ended the week by choosing the memory we want to write about and illustrating our front cover.

Our grammar focus has been superlative adjectives that use the suffix -est. For example: happiest, biggest and greatest.

In History, we have been learning about “hereditary monarchy” and the line of succession to the British throne.

In STEM, our focus is materials and their properties. This week we investigated the absorbency of different materials and waterproof properties.

In Phonics, our focus sound this week is /er/ and we have been recapping the /n/ sound. As ever, please read with your child daily using both the decodable books and reading for pleasure books. Phonics books will be changed next Friday 24th January.
